It’s already the first anniversary of Indie Collection Japan!!! One year ago, our friends from the Tokyo Indies meetup had to pause their meetup event which was held every month in Tokyo’s Fab Cafe because of the pandemic. We decided to co-run an online version called Indie Collection Japan as Tokyo Indies and asobu, but couldn’t imagine we’ll reach 12 editions! 新年が皆様の健康で幸せな年になりますよう、スタッフ一同、心よりお祈り申し上げます。 2020年は、asobuも例外ではなく、私たち全員にとって挑戦的な年でした。新しいコミュニティを立ち上げることは決して簡単なことではありませんが、世界的なコロナ禍の中でそれを行うことはハードモードのように感じました。 しかし、コロナ禍は私たちの計画のいくつかを保留せざるを得ない状況に追い込んだとはいえ、対面イベントの中止、渋谷にあるワーキングスペースの一時的な閉鎖などです。 しかしいくつかの利点をもたらしました。特にオンラインへのシフトは、より多くのバーチャルな交流会につながり、日本中（そして世界中！）の開発者がよりオープンでアクセスしやすい環境になったことで、渋谷の小さなスペースからスタートしたものをはるかに超えて増えました。

All of us here wish you and yours a happy and healthy (and better) new year. 2020 was a challenge for all of us, asobu being no exception. Getting a new community off the ground is never going to be easy, but doing it during a global pandemic definitely felt like Hard Mode. But while COVID did force us to put some of our plans on hold — halting in-person events, temporarily closing our shared Tokyo workspace, etc. — it has brought some benefits as well: the shift to online, especially, has led to more virtual meet ups, and helped us be more open and accessible to developers throughout all Japan (and the world!), causing our numbers to grow well beyond what we could ever have started from in our small space in Shibuya!

If you’ve found our website, chances are you already have some idea of what we’re about, but just in case, and simply put: we want to help Japanese indies realize their awesome potential. 先週の4月22日に、Tokyo Indiesのオンライン版である『インディーコレクションJAPAN』の第一回を開催しまました。 東京のFabCafeで普段開催されているイベントのように、インディーゲームクリエーターや関係者が、一人づつ5〜10分間、自分のゲームやプロジェクトを紹介して、その後お客さんとみんなで飲んだり、喋ったりしました。

Last week we held the first Indie Collection Japan, an online version of the monthly Tokyo Indies Meetup. Indie Collection Japan is modeled on the real-world meetup, where developers or other people involved in indie games give short presentations with plenty of time for casual chat and drinks before and after.

With the current coronavirus situation in Japan, all our events since mid-February are on hold and we’re looking at how the situation will evolve before announcing new events. But today i would like to talk about the first play test session we had at asobu earlier this year.

こんにちは、asobuのコミュニティーマネージャーのアンです。 asobuを開いた時から、いつかGlobal Game Jamの会場になりたいなーと思っていました。そこで、asobuが発足して数ヶ月が経ち、いよいよ1月31日に14人の参加者が集い、初めてゲームジャムを開催したということもあり、こぢんまりとした雰囲気で少人数でいべんとを迎えることができました。

Hi there — this is Anne, asobu’s community manager. When we started asobu, we had already in our minds the idea of hosting a Global Game Jam. In January, a few months after asobu’s launch, we achieved this objective with 14 participants coming to the space to take part of the Game Jam in a low-key, cozy atmosphere, intended to leave enough space for all participants to let their creative juices flow.
